How to Make Friends at Online Colleges
By ECR on Jan 21, 2008 in Society
Online colleges provide a great number of opportunities. They offer flexibility in obtaining an education which is something that many people in our busy society need. However, they also have their drawbacks. One of the biggest of these drawbacks is that getting online degrees means that you aren’t physically attending classes with other people.
Much of what college is about is making friends with people who are studying the same things that you are. You shouldn’t have to miss out on this part of college just because you’re getting an online degree. Here are some tips for making friends in your online classes:
- Take advantage of group projects. Use them as an excuse to meet in the real world if you all live in the city where the school is based.
- Make use of all forms of communication. Chat up your classmates on instant messenger, send them conversational emails and even exchange phone numbers with them. This is how friendships start to form.
- Use social networking sites. Continue your budding friendships after the semester is over by connecting on sites like MySpace.
- Be outgoing. You might have to make the first communication move and you might need to do it more than once. Online students can be shy. Just continue trying to chat with people in your class through the methods of communication that are available to you. They’ll eventually warm up.
- Plan a post-semester party. If everyone is located in a different city, try to get a group trip together during the summer. If you all meet up in Vegas for a weekend, you’re bound to form some bonds!
You can use your college years to establish some terrific (and lasting) friendships. And you don’t have to attend actual classes to do it!
