People used to go window shopping when they didn’t have money but wanted to dream about what they could have if they did. They would get dressed up, go downtown where all of the stores were and walk from place to place to see what was available for sale. Although people certainly still do that, traditional window shopping has decreased considerably in favor of using the online shopping cart to fulfill those daydreams.

For one thing, it doesn’t cost you any money to get online and browse your favorite stores. Window shopping requires the cost of transportation and usually involves buying lunch out on the town. Additionally, you’ll have a better array of stores available to you online than you probably have available to you in the limited shopping area of your own city. You can daydream about a life filled with Parisian fashion or English antiques.

Most importantly, the online shopping cart lets you store items to be bought at another time when you have the money available. Unless you’re a fan of the layaway plan, you can’t do this with regular window shopping. It’s a feature which makes daydreaming during online shopping seem like it actually has a purpose.
