We moved around a lot when I was a kid, a direct result of my father’s alcoholism and the fact hat he kept losing job after job.  He always claimed that he drank because he kept getting fired, but I knew it was the other way around. Ever once in awhile my Mom would try to convince him to seek treatment, but after a couple of years she gave up hope.  I mean she had tried everything from threatening to leave to getting him into different alcohol treatment centers. Florida was where we eventually ended up staying with relatives so we would have a roof over our heads.

I thought that Florida was a great place and that maybe if Mom could convince him to check himself into a Florida drug rehab center there was a chance that Dad could get better.  Florida drug treatment is top notch and there were some treatment methods that we hadn’t heard of elsewhere.

Mom didn’t even have to beg him to go into treatment: for the first time he wanted to go and get some help on his own. He has now been sober for 7 years.  He still takes it one day at a time, but we are so thankful and happy.

I don’t know if you know what a shisha pipe is (I didn’t).  It’s a pipe attached to a vessel of water that you smoke tobacco through, so the tobacco gets filtered through the water before it reaches your lungs (if you like Alice in Wonderland, the caterpillar is actually smoking shisha).  In theory it should be better for you than cigarettes, and it’s totally legal and really popular in middle Eastern countries. 

Anyway, I went to my friend’s house last night, and you should see the apparatus they have set up.  This water pipe is about two feet high to start with, with long snaking arms that are the pipes.  They have this on a table, and of course, it’s freezing here, so they quickly discovered that this wasn’t very conducive to a good time.  So they devised a whole plan for one of those outdoor kitchens around this pipe.  There’s a barbeque island to one side that has a built in heater, and then there’s another island on the other side with all of their outdoor kitchen supplies and two outdoor sinks.  Now it’s totally toasty and perfect to smoke shisha all night long.  I don’t know any regular smokers that are this dedicated to it.

As the bride, your wedding is your special day.  This is a chance for you to bask in everyone’s attentions for a day, to be treated like a princess, and to tie the knot with the man of your dreams.  And just like any princess, you need a castle…  even if you don’t get to keep it afterward!
